With its legs fused together in a strange fleshy mass and its body radically twisted and emaciated, it’s face vertically split in half, most likely a homage to “The Thing”, the Exploders are fortunately slow to move, but charge in surprisingly fast when they close in to close range and attempt to clobber Isaac with the massive pustule on the end of their arm that is filled with some explosive material that explodes on impact, thus making the Exploder the suicide bomber of the Necromorphs. Be wary of their counterpart, the Enhanced Brute, an entirely black version of the Brute that is far more resistant to damage. This can be used to Isaac’s advantage for the back of the creature is still exposed.īrutes are incredibly strong, and can tear a human apart with ease. When attacked in its weak spots the Brute has been observed to contract within its armored plates to protect itself. They are amazingly quick for their size, and you should have Stasis handy to slow them down or they can quickly run Isaac over like a freight train. Brutes attack Isaac with a decimating punch, and a headbutt that can easily knock him off his feet. They have an armored bone exoskeleton on their anterior body for defense, however, as aforementioned, the posterior of the creature is relatively weak and devoid of defense. They are vulnerable to attacks from behind, but given their speed and sheer power, getting into position for a clean shot is indeed difficult. They also possess nearly invulnerable natural armor on their front, though their back is completely devoid of armor. They are large, hardy, and like all necromorphs, extremely violent. Bigger changes were teased, but it may be a while before we get to see any of them. The Necromorphs Isaac must fight are disturbing by themselves, but the Brute could be the strongest of the lot. A combination of multiple hosts fused together into one large being, it’s impossible to tell exactly how many bodies have been reanimated to create this monster. It’s still very early in the process - according to Motive, Dead Space is only about a year into development - but from this first look, the Dead Space remake appears to be an extremely faithful rebuild of the 2008 game with some small tweaks throughout. Motive showed off a brief demo of a zero-gravity section, displaying the new game’s improved take on zero-G controls that will likely serve to make those parts much less frustrating. The remake will also address one of the few sore spots in the first Dead Space: the game’s zero-gravity sections. In keeping with the ethos of the original game, this isn’t just for cosmetic reasons – the amount of flesh on the Necromorph’s body is now an indicator of health. It’s a change that will likely encourage players to use more of the game’s weapons as opposed to sticking with the handy plasma cutter for their whole playthrough.Īdditionally, the increased detail afforded by current-gen hardware and EA’s Frostbite engine mean that dismemberment will be rendered in even greater detail, with layers of flesh and bone flaying away before the Necromorph is out of commission. Now, each weapon will affect different kinds of Necromorph in varying ways - some will stagger, stun, or shred depending on what enemy type they’re used on. The remake keeps this intact, but adds some strategic depth. Much like in the original game, this is done with sci-fi versions of industrial tools like plasma cutters, and by targeting the Necromorphs’ various extremities to lop them off with lasers and various lethal acoutrements. On a livestream from the Dead Space remake developers at EA’s Motive Studio, the developers showed off extremely early footage of a prototype displaying the game’s reworked limb-cutting. This is still true in the forthcoming Dead Space remake, but said limb-cutting looks like it will be even gnarlier than before. The game famously asks the player, as the engineer Isaac Clarke, to cut off their limbs. In addition to being an absolutely terrifying work of video game horror, Dead Space is known for the unique way it asks you to deal with the Necromorphs, the horrifying reanimated and transformed corpses that stalk the claustrophobic USG Ishimura spacecraft.
